An urbanite with an agricultural science degree and work experience in the agricultural sector, he makes sense of farm, garden, and food issues for the urban public—and writes about urban food issues for the farm sector.

In the Beginning

As a small lad, he loved gardening and aspired to be a streetcar driver. At some point his aspirations changed: he wanted to grow plants in a greenhouse, so he studied horticulture. Part way through his studies he realized he didn’t want to spend life in a greenhouse…but no longer wanted to be a streetcar driver—so he ended up working at a greenhouse supply company.

For a while he left horticulture, and then later came back to the world of growing things with a stint in farm marketing. All that bouncing around proved to him one thing: he is hooked on food, farming, and gardening.

Now Steven has knit them all together doing what he loves: writing and speaking.
